Each of Le Sutra’s three levels is based on one of the three gunas of Indian philosophy, namely Tamas, Rajas, and Sattva.
Yoga describes all matter in the universe as deriving from the basic substrate known as Prakriti. It gives rise to the three primary gunas (energy qualities), which form the fundamental aspects of all nature: energy, matter, and consciousness. Conscious awareness and manipulation of the three gunas is a powerful method for reducing stress, increasing inner peace, and leading to enlightenment.
All three gunas are always present, but to varying degrees, in all beings and objects around us. We humans have the unique ability to consciously change the levels of gunas in our bodies and minds. The gunas cannot be separated or removed from oneself, but they can be consciously acted upon to promote or stifle their growth.
